Flood Insurance Maryland: Where it Rains it Can Flood
Flood damage can be devastating for any family. Floods can happen anywhere — just one inch of floodwater can cause up to $25,000 in damage. As a home or condo owner, you may think your homeowner’s insurance has you covered from most natural disasters, unfortunately it does not. Flood insurance is a separate policy that can cover buildings, the contents in a building, or both, so it is important to protect your most important financial assets — your home, your business, your possessions.
You might be surprised to learn that about 20% of flood insurance claims come from moderate- to low-risk areas. Although you may not be required to purchase flood insurance by law or by your mortgage company, the benefits of having extra coverage for your family home far outweigh the risks.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is administered by the Federal Government, was the only option for flood insurance for many years. The flood insurance industry now has multiple private insurance companies offering the same coverage at much lower rates. Most lenders that mandate coverage in flood zones are now accepting these policies in lieu of the costlier NFIP policy. At Gerety Insurance, we have access to several of these new private flood insurance carriers and we would be happy to compare rates for you.
